New TNT production line to double Polish explosives plant's output in 3-4 years
Adds value of investment, paragraph 5, quotes
Completion of new line expected in three to four years
Investment seen at up to 1.5 billion zlotys, CEO says
Poland plans to increase hexogen RDX production and mine manufacturing
BYDGOSZCZ, Poland, March 16 (Reuters) - Poland's Nitro-Chem, a major supplier of trinitrotoluene (TNT) for NATO countries' armies, will build a new production line to double its output of the explosive, officials said on Monday.
The line's completion is expected in three to four years, Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski told a news conference.
With an annual production of 10,000 metric tons, Nitro-Chem is already Europe's main producer of TNT and one of the world's largest, according to its website. It is a major supplier of the explosive for the U.S. military and other NATO members.
The material is used in artillery shells, bombs, grenades and mines.
"Doubled production of TNT will constitute an incredible competitive advantage, also giving us, Poland, diplomatic opportunities," Gawkowski said. He did not elaborate on the diplomatic opportunities.
Nitro-Chem deputy CEO Karol Przybyszewski told Reuters that the investment in the new production line, worth between 1 billion and 1.5 billion zlotys ($269 million-$404 million), would come from the company's own funds and external financing, with talks with Poland's Ministry of State Assets and state-owned banks at an advanced stage.
Przybyszewski also said that the company had signed a number of letters of intent with prospective buyers of the new TNT capacity, adding that these were entities from NATO and European countries.
Adam Leszkiewicz, the CEO of PGZ, which owns Nitro-Chem through its subsidiary Mesko, said the company also planned to grow its production capacity of hexogen, also known as RDX, and take part in the manufacturing of mines.
Poland, like most of Russia's European neighbours, has moved to leave a treaty that bans the production and use of anti-personnel mines, seeking to deploy them as part of its "East Shield" project to secure its borders with Belarus and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad.

Polish explosives maker to start work on new TNT line
By Karol Badohal
WARSAW, March 13 (Reuters) - Poland's Nitro-Chem, a key supplier of explosives used in U.S.-made bombs and artillery shells, is to sign a deal with Polish design firm Prozap to boost its production of trinitrotoluene (TNT), the company said on Friday.
The decision to increase output of the explosive used in aerial bombs and large-caliber ammunition comes as demand for additional munitions surges after the U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, which has escalated since late February.
Washington is pushing for arms makers to boost weapons production as it works to replenish supplies expended against Iran and in other recent military action.
State-owned Nitro-Chem is set to sign the deal with Prozap, a unit of Polish fertilizer maker Grupa Azoty, on Monday, the company said in an email.
"The new TNT facility will increase production capacity and modernize the technological infrastructure, while maintaining the highest safety standards," Nitro-Chem, a unit of Poland's state-owned arms group PGZ, said.
"This investment is a response to the growing demand for TNT from foreign partners and aligns with strategic needs related to national security and defense."
Nitro-Chem, whose legacy in producing TNT spans back to the 1940s, is now the largest producer of the explosive in NATO, with local press reports putting its output at around 10,000 tons per year.
Production of TNT had been discontinued in many Western countries in recent decades due to lower demand since the end of the Cold War, as well as concerns over environmental contamination and health risks.

Poland's Nitro-Chem signs $310 mln deal to supply TNT for US military
Adds deal value, details, minister's quote; paragraphs 1-7
WARSAW, April 9 (Reuters) - Polish explosives maker Nitro-Chem signed a deal on Wednesday to supply explosives worth 1.2 billion zlotys ($310 million) to a U.S. firm, intended for the U.S. military, the deputy defence minister said.
"We are talking about a colossal contract," the minister, Cezary Tomczyk, told reporters after the signing, adding that the deal provided for delivery of 18,000 tons of TNT to the United States over three years.
From 2027 to 2029, TNT, or trinitrotoluene, will be supplied to U.S. firm Paramount Enterprises International by Nitro-Chem, a subsidiary of Poland's state-owned defence group PGZ, group spokesperson Jacek Matuszak told Reuters.
The deal is bigger than deals both companies signed in 2023 and 2024 for deliveries of TNT to supply U.S. government weapons programs in 2025 and 2025 respectively and intended for tasks such as the filling of artillery shells and aerial bombs.
"This deal's value exceeds that of either of the two earlier ones," Matuszak said. "The TNT that is now being contracted will be used for the needs of the United States armed forces, including the production of 155-mm ammunition."
The new deal did not require expansion of Nitro-Chem's production lines or new hiring, he added, saying, "We are able to fulfill this order with the current workforce and our current infrastructure."
Nitro-Chem is Europe's largest producer of TNT and one of the world's largest, its website says.
